Take a step back in time and explore the Clarence Valley Heritage Trails

Discover the rich history of the Clarence Valley through a selection of heritage walks in Grafton, Ulmarra, Maclean, and Yamba.

Each town has their own unique story to tell, and you are invited to learn more about the region’s past as the heritage walks guide you through significant buildings and landmarks that highlight the diverse heritage of the Clarence Valley.

Grafton Heritage Trail

In Grafton, the beating heart of the Clarence Valley, the walk takes you past grand historic buildings, such as the Grafton Courthouse (pictured above) and the 1876 Post Office.

Famous for its jacaranda-lined streets and Bendy Bridge, the heritage-filled veins of Grafton pump ‘old country town” into life. Blessed with broad avenues and pretty architecture, walk or cycle down the streets and pathways along the banks of the mighty Clarence River, and absorb and ‘feel’ Grafton for the heritage hub it is.

Ulmarra Heritage Trail

Ulmarra offers a serene experience, taking you on a journey through town and through time. With a focus on its charming river village atmosphere, you can admire the mid-late Victorian and early Edwardian architecture and imagine life on horseback as you stroll.

Maclean Heritage Trail

Discover Macleann’s buildings of historical significance on this walking and cycling trail around Australia’s Scottish town. The 3km trail takes around 2 hours to complete by foot and leads you through the CBD, the Riverside Precinct and the lower section of Maclean Hill. As you stroll along this historic trail, enjoy Maclean’s boutique shopping and dining experiences, the river walk, Maclean’s tartan poles, and views across the mighty Clarnece River.

Maclean Tartan Power Poles

Loved for being known as Australia’s Scottish town, you can’t help but notice hundreds of tartan-painted power poles as you wander down the historic streets of Maclean. The iconic Maclean Tartan Power Poles were instigated by the Maclean Scottish Town Association in the year 2000 to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic Torch which was to be conveyed through the township of Maclean.

Yamba Historical Walks

A choice of two mapped walks through Yamba allows you to explore the local history of this coastal gem. Choose between a flat walk through the CBD or a more challenging trek up to Polit Hill where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

These heritage walks not only offer an opportunity to connect with the region’s history but also provide a deeper understanding of the people and cultures that shaped the Clarence Valley. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply enjoy a scenic stroll through historic towns, these walks promise a memorable journey through time.
